* Wolters Kluwer PHAST script data suggest that Vertex’s (VRTX) Incivek (telaprevir) is now being prescribed 3:1 over Merck’s (MRK) Victrelis (boceprevir) in the U.S. for hepatitis C.
* Weekly prescriptions for the week ended July 8th were 638 for Incivek vs. 170 for Victrelis.
* Total prescriptions since launch are 2,247 for Incivek vs. 978 for Victrelis (Figure 2).
* Incivek’ duration of therapy, safety, and efficacy advantages are being tested against Merck’s marketing experience and its recent partnership with Roche to copromote Victrelis, as well as Victrelis’s lower cost.
* inThought continues to expect many health plans to guide doctors towards prescription of Victrelis. Recent discussions with physicians suggest a willingness to prescribe either medicine, at least initially.
* Therefore, we expect the prescription ratio between the drugs to stabilize at 2:1 by the end of 2011. Because Incivek is more expensive than Victrelis, the revenue ratio will be closer to 2.5:1.
* We maintain our 2011 estimate for Incivek of $424 million and our Victrelis estimate of $174 million.
